NS & monks

One of my bestfriends enlisted in army today. We (Jess, Iffah and me) went to Pulau Tekong to see him off. And we managed to skype with Vidya in the morning while having breakfast. I hope all is well with Vinesh.

While we were at Pulau Tekong, a persistent thought refused to leave my mind. You see, I looked up the meaning of monks on wikipedia for some unknown reasons. One of the definitions states "a male member of a religious group, living, praying and working together and following a set of rules" and another definition states "a member of a religious community of men typically living under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience".

Now let's compare this to the situation we usually see when boys enlist for NS.

  1. They turn bald. -Monks are bald. I guess it's to make them all look alike, and to remove any possible source of vanity. Of course, I don't really know if it's alright for real men to be vainpots. And boys are supposed to turn into men through NS, no?

  2. A group of guys, living and working together. -Well this part is true. Afterall, it's one for all and all for one.

  3. They'll be obedient and will follow the given set of rules. -Similar to the definitions mentioned above, no? Though "will" is just a future tense. They might still be devils after booking out hahaha.

  4. They'll be learning how to protect our country! -That's what ninja monks do right..? Shaolin monks.
Everytime I see bald NS guys, I'd be thinking, "are they happy having to live a life almost similar to monks?" though I perfectly know the answer. (From my own point of view and perception survey)
